Recreational and Cultural Opportunities

Lafayette, Alabama, county seat of Chambers County, is located in the central portion of the state; 13 miles from the Georgia stat line.  The area is well known for its outstanding recreational and cultural opportunities which include hunting, fishing, gold, major college sports, professional sports, and of course the nationally acclaimed Alabama Shakespeare Festival.  Talladega International Motor Speedway and world renowned Callaway Gardens .  Alabama has long been recognized for its abundance of water and beautiful lakes.

LaFayette is surrounded by four of the state’s major impoundments, which have excellent fishing and recreational facilities.  Lake West Point, the first U.S. Corp of Engineers’ lake built with recreation as the number one priority, is located 15 minutes east of LaFayette .  Lake Martin, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful lakes in the southeast in 30min away to the west and famous for its spotted bass fishing.  Lake Harris , the youngest of the four lakes, is a 40 minute drive north and Lake Walter F. George (Eufaula) 90 minutes south has reputation for great largemouth bass fishing.  The Chambers County Public Lake (180 acres) and the LaFayette City Lake (90) acres are near by. 

Chambers County has an abundance of deer and turkey, lengthy seasons and liberal harvest limits.  Deer season runs from the third week in November through January.  One buck and one doe may be taken each day per hunter.  Turkey season extends from March 15 until the end of April with a five bird limit a season.  Many smaller game animals also abound.  Rock fence Station hunting preserve, offering guided deer and quail hunting, is ten mile northwest of LaFayette .  Sporting clays trap and skeet shooting are also available.  The unique lodge, with its great room, meeting room and kitchen, is surrounded by a number of railroad cars accessible through the great room.  The railroad cars have been refurbished and are used as bedrooms. 


Rock fence provides an excellent setting for business meetings, reunions and other special events.  LaFayette is blessed with a number of top caliber golf courses within a 10 35 minute drive.  One of the crown jewels of Alabama’s acclaimed Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail the Grand National is located in Opelika .  The Facility boasts tow 18 hole championship courses, and 18 hole short course, expansive clubhouse, practice range and a 129-room lodge with dining and meeting accommodations.  Callaway Gardens in Pine Mountain has three 18 hole course including the Mountain Course, home of the PGA’s Buick Southern Open.  Still Waters, on the shores of Lake Martin , has two beautiful 18 hole courses, plus dining and rentals from condos to house.  Other courses in the area include the Auburn University Club, Auburn Links, Moore’s Mill and The Fields.  Riverside Country club in Lanett has an outstanding nine hole course.  Another Robert Trent Jones venue with three 18 hole course is 90 minutes away in Prattville . 

Callaway Gardens offers much more than golf.  Living up to its name.  Callaway’s 14,000 acres are home to some of the most beautiful gardens anywhere.  Numerous lakes for fishing and recreation are found on the grounds including Robin Lake Bach, the world’s largest main-made white sand beach.  Cottages and villas, surrounded by bicycle and nature trails, are available for rent.  Tennis, a gun club for shooters and guided quail hunts are also offered.  A few of the many other Callaway attractions are the Cecil B. Day Butterfly Center, which houses over 1.000 tropical butterflies representing 50 different species, the Virginia Han Callaway Discovery Center and the John A Sibley Horticultural center. World class actors and plays abound at the Alabama Shakespeare Festival in nearby Montgomery .  The building, awe inspiring in it self, has a Festival Theater with 350 plus seats and an 80-100 seat Octagon Theater for plays in the round.  Shakespeare’s greatest works are performed each year along with contemporary dramas and plays. 

Talladega International Motor Speedway, on of NASCAR’S premier raceways, and is home to two NASCAR events each year.  Talladega joins Daytona as the two largest and fastest tracks on the NASCAR circuit.  Atlanta with its international airport, professional sports and much more is only an hour and fifteen minutes away and Auburn University (23)miles) provides major college sports, continuing education along with many other programs of interest associated with a major college.  The Alabama and Florida panhandle beaches are only four houses away and the mountains of north Georgia and southwestern North Carolina are even closer.  LaFayette is blessed with a strong sense of historical tradition, quit, small town lifestyle, and the best of southern hospitality and surrounded by exciting cultural and recreational opportunities.
