Why We Chose LaFayette for Retirement
   Advantages of Living in LaFayette
by Jerry and Mac Bryant

We assumed after retirement that one of us would continue working for money to supplement our income so that we could continue to live in the style we were accustomed.  Then we found LaFayette .  There were many opportunities to start a small business.  Buildings were available with low rent, the taxes were low, the price of houses was low, the cost of food was low and LaFayette owns the utilities so they were low.  We still intend to start that business, but haven’t gotten around to it.  All of this plus the convenience of living in a small town with little traffic, we have the advantage of an Interstate 12 miles away and four major cities within two hours of driving.  Those cities, Atlanta, Columbus, Birmingham, and Montgomery , have four major military bases which were especially important to us being retired military.  Atlanta airport is 1.5 hrs away with nonstop flights to everywhere.

The Climate in LaFayette is pleasant and suits us just fine.  We’ve tried the cold county (Springfield, Mass) and the hot (Houston, Texas), we’ve tried island living (Bahamas) where the sun shines all the time and Europe (Germany) where the sun never shines, but here you get the four season with some cold and some hot, some sun and some clouds.  It makes us appreciate the difference but doesn’t rub our nose in it.  In addition to a couple of clinics for the small stuff, we have a major medical facility 20 miles away, East Alabama Medical Center , which has been named in the top 100 hospitals in the U.S for two years.  It has a “55 Plus” club which offers special parking, seminars, health screening, etc. for us old people.

If you manage to become very old, LaFayette is the place to be.  We have many older people who live here.  Most of them live at home, hire someone to stay with them in their house and drive them to medical appointments and their social events around town.  If you prefer, we have independent living apartments, assisted living and nursing homes.  Our quaint, antique town and its people are a special attraction within itself supplemented by local theater in the Valley, Callaway Gardens 45 minutes away and two junior colleges nearby.

Auburn a major university 20 miles away, provides world class sports, classes for adult learning plus all kinds of other activities.  We also have a 175 acre County Lake that you just might be the only one fishing at any given time.  Hunting is big time here.  You can go to one of those hunting lodges here; however, you will probably go one of your neighbors to his/her country place outside of town.  LaFayette wants and will welcome people who are interesting and interested.

You can get involved with Friends of the Library, the Chambers County Museum , the Pilot Club, the Rotary Club, the Lions Club, and the Citizens for a Better LaFayette, the American Legion and Hospice.  LaFayette is a very safe place to live because it is in the middle of the Bible belt and it practices what it preaches.  The people here are God fearing and will invite you to participate in the many church services and social activities.
